By now everyone has heard to change the batteries in your smoke detector when you change your clocks an hour forward near the end of winter and then get that hour back in early November. But did you know that smoke detectors generally only last 10 years? That means that if you are living in a house built in or before 2008 the builder installed smoke detectors need to be replaced. It’s not an onerous task unless your ceilings are higher than your ladder can handle, but it does bring to mind that we put ourselves in the mindset of “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” perhaps to our detriment when it comes to safety equipment. So why does this matter in a blog about Probate and planning? Well…when was your Estate Plan crafted? Have things changed since then?
